Entry# 10: Disorders

   Disorders can be defined from a biological perspective as abnormal behavior. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) is the standard the classification of mental disorders and is used by mental health professionals in the United States. I will discuss three categories of disorders in this entry.

Types of disorders

Phobias: strong and irrational fear of certain objects and situations

  • Agoraphobia: Fear of public spaces
  • Social Phobia: Fear of 
  • Specific phobias: Fear of specific of specific animals, objects, or situation
Generalized anxiety disorder

 
  • Panic Disorder: Recurring unexpected panic disorders
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder: preoccupation with a perceived flaw in the body. most likely face.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Obsessions are repetitive thoughts or impulses that invade the mind. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors to neutralize obsessions.
Depression


  • Major Depression: characterized by one or more major depressive episodes.
  • Bi Polar Disorder: depression with brief periods of mania
  • Dysthymic Disorder: long lasting mood disruption but not as severe as major depression
